Controlling the Home

Central Control

What is a “hub” and do I need one?

The brain of the Operations

A “hub” is a central device or mobile app that connects different smart home devices. Think of the hub as the brain and the devices as different body parts. Smart hubs make it possible to control every device in the smart home from a single app/device.

Hubs can wirelessly communicate to connected devices using WiFi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and/or Bluetooth. There is also the option of hardwiring the hub and devices to eliminate WiFi traffic.

If there will only be a few WiFi devices being controlled in the home, a hub may not be required, although it is still recommended. If a large number of connected devices are to be controlled in a smart home, a hub is a necessity.
