A security system, in its most basic form, is a collection of sensors designed to alert homeowners of activity or an intrusion in the home. A security system will sound a siren if triggered, and if monitored, the alarm will call out to a monitoring station who can dispatch the police, fire department, and/or paramedics.

- Medical alerts
A security system will give connected smart devices more information about the occupancy of the house, which enables a smart home to make automated security and energy-efficient actions within the home. Scenes can also be pre-programmed to carry out a list of functions when the security system is armed or disarmed.
